A Slight Refresh
I had a dash of inspiration late one night last week and finally got around to pumping out a slight refresh for this site. The two main instigators for this were Foldy960 and Pat Dryburgh’s latest redesign of his site.
First, I’ve been wanting to improve the responsiveness of this site. I’ve been itching to try out Foldy960 by the talented hombres at Paravel. It’s lightweight and simple to get up and started with a responsive layout.
Secondly, ever since Pat refreshed his own site in December last year, I’ve been itching to do one of my own. With this latest version, I wanted the focus to be on the words and felt that a clean layout and great typography would achieve that goal. I’m happy with how it turned out.
The line between being inspired and copying can be a fine one indeed. I realize that this current look is very similar to Pat’s … but it’s not a copy. We both make use of similar fonts — I’ve been using Proxima Nova and Proxima Nova Condensed since the last design. I was already using a very light background, as does Pat. Removing unnecessary elements and moving navigation from the side to the top of the page could be labelled as copying half the web. But I digress … hopefully Pat isn’t too pissed at me.
My style has changed significantly from my first blog, The Weekly Review. I’ve moved from always using a dark background to the current bright one. I’ve toned down the majority of the colors. And I’ve finally stepped over the edge to insanity and have the primary body text as a serif (the lovely Rooney Web via Typekit). And lastly, after using ExpressionEngine for the first time, there were a few changes I wanted to make to the site now that I’m more comfortable with the tool.
The emphasis of my blog should be my writing. Now the focus will be on carving out time to ensure that writing gets its proper priority in my life. And thank you to all who take the time to read the words here. Your attention is valuable and is not taken for granted by this writer. Peace.
